In my quest to expand my repertoire during this Restaurant Week, I booked a table at the Red Rooster in Harlem. Restaurant Week is a perfect opportunity to try new places, and get a sampling of their dishes at just $29 for lunch. This restaurant has been on our list for some time now, and I finally decided to just book it. It is in Harlem so not quite in the middle of it all, but it is fairly easy to get to via the subway or bus.
Red Rooster is the creation of Marcus Samuelsson, Ethiopian-born and Swedish-raised chef/restaurateur, who says that he developed his love of food and cooking from his adoptive grandmother Helga from Sweden. I just thought of the "Inga from Sweden" scene from Trading Places. Anyway....
Red Rooster has been around and thriving quite nicely in Harlem for about seven years now. Reservations are really recommended, especially for the Sunday Gospel Brunch. There are musical performances almost every day of the week.
I loved the very eclectic decor of the restaurant.
Paintings, sculptures, and photographs featured at the Red Rooster are the works of mostly local artists.
We chose to order from the Restaurant Week menu.
My husband really liked his Rainbow Summer Salad with grilled fruit, goat cheese, and spiced pecans.
My Wedge Caesar was delicious, but I did push the anchovy on my husband. The cornbread chip on the side was a neat touch.
Choosing the entree was difficult as all the options sounded great. My husband decided to go with the shrimp and grits with Uncle Ed's gumbo stew with Andouille sausage and okra.
My fried chicken with sweet potato, collard greens and pickles was delicious.
The chicken was perfect as was the fantastic fried shell.
We ordered both dessert to share. The seasonal sorbets, mango, watermelon, and blueberry (I think), were lovely and refreshing.
I loved my mini donuts with strawberry-orange preserve, chocolate dipping sauce, and whipped cream.
Here is a schedule of the daily performances at Red Rooster and Ginny's Super Club which is downstairs.
A small shop with books and Red Rooster memorabilia is set up near the entrance.
