My most favorite activity while on vacation is to visit the local food markets. I have been to markets in every city I have visited and while the ones in Paris and Warsaw are my favorite, I have to say that the Union Square market is right up there. It is so wonderful to have a produce market in the heart of the city, and one that offers such a varied selection of great quality goods.
The Union Square Green market has been held since 1976 and it is where regional small family farmers sell their fruits, vegetables and other products. All the food comes from farms within 150-200 miles of the market, it is fresh, some organic and of top notch quality.
A few vendors sell muffins, cakes and pies.
This fish/seafood vendor had a huge line, a good sign.
Loved the colors of the vegetables.
The fall is probably the best season for most colorful vegetables. This stall made me think of starting to plan my Thanksgiving menu.
I had no idea that there were so many different hues of radishes.
Even if not shopping, this is a wonderful place for a walk. I really enjoy talking with the vendors, watching them set up, or taste some samples before deciding on what to buy.
Homemade pastas of different colors and shapes.
These are probably some of the last tomatoes of the season.
I'm looking forward to baking an apple pie for the holiday.
I loved these flower arrangements, very creative.
I got the beet horseradish from this lady, it was delicious and with just enough of a kick.
Quite a few of the vendors donate end-of-day unsold produce to City Harvest, which directs food donations to food pantries and soup kitchens citywide.
