Andaz Hotel, Shanghai

My plan when booking hotels for our stay in Shanghai was to diversify the locations.  This was our first time in this city and one thing I have learned from research was that Shanghai was huge.  We had two and a half days in Shanghai at the beginning of our China trip and two and a half days at the end.  I booked Andaz because the reviews were really positive and the location was excellent.    For the last leg of the trip I booked a hotel in the Bund area, this way we would get to stay in two very different parts of the city.

Andaz hotel is located in Xintiandi, in the heart of downtown Shanghai.

Upon check in we were offered iced tea and given cute luggage tags as gifts.

The lobby was very modern, bright and inviting.

This was the hallway leading to our room.

The great quality wooden floor made the room look very sharp.

We found the room to be spacious and very clean.  There were two pillows to choose from, one soft and one firm, and the bed was very comfortable.

The closet had an iron and an ironing board, a safe, hanger for belts and two gas masks.  I noticed the gas masks in every hotel that we stayed in while in China.

Lighting, curtains, blinds, air conditioning, etc., were controlled by an IPad. The WIFI in the room was very strong and the color of the room lighting could be customized.  For me, one negative of the room was that I felt the need for more light when I tried to read while laying in bed.

Contents of the drawers.  All the snacks and nonalcoholic drinks in the room were free of charge.

The stone grotto shower was super cool

and the color of the tub light could be changed from pink to green.

I did not take a photo of the best thing about this bathroom!!!  A top of the line TOTO toilet!  The lid of the toilet would go up when sensing motion of an approaching person, there was a "privacy" setting which were sounds of a stream and birds chirping.  It also had a "deodorizing" setting, a male and female wash function as well as drying.  My husband was so impressed, he is now researching getting a TOTO for our home.

Interesting decoration.

Breakfast was not included with our room but free tea, coffee, croissants, muffins and sandwiches were available, each morning, near the reception.

Andaz had a great boutique hotel vibe and the live band playing in the lobby in the afternoons was a nice touch.   We were very happy with the location of the hotel.  It was a short walk to the metro, some excellent restaurants and the high end shopping on Huai Hai Zhong Road.  The Xintiandi area of shops and restaurants was a five minute walk from the hotel.  On the side note, we had some of the best dumplings from a small stall right across the street from the hotel entrance.  We found the staff to be very helpful, each morning someone from the reception would help me map out my itinerary.  The doorman also helped us when two different taxis refused to take us to the Jewish Museum.  I don't know why that was an issue, hopefully it was just related to the location of the museum.

We liked the hotel so much, we cancelled our reservations with the hotel in the Bund and rebooked Andaz for the last leg of our trip.  Unfortunately, due to some really bad weather, we left China earlier than planned.

Our plan is to come back to Shanghai and Andaz in a very near future.

Bordier Butter - The Best Butter in France

France is in the midst of a butter shortage!  Due to a decrease in milk production and a substantial demand for French pastries all over the world (mainly China and the Middle East), the price of butter has increased by 60% in one year.  The French are stocking up and thus creating shortages.  French newspapers are publishing articles titled "A guide to cooking without butter".  So, with hopes that the shortages are temporary, here is my ode to the best butter in the world.  I'm not kidding.  The. Best. Butter. In. The. World. Mr. Bordier, a grandson and a son of cheese mongers, became a butter artisan in 1985.  He acquired a creamery originally founded in 1927.  The supreme taste of the Bordier butter was first recognized by a chef from the Plaza Athenee while vacationing in Brittany, a beautiful region in northwestern France. Bordier is the lone butter master to still use the old method of kneading the butter according to the 19th century t...

Indian Accent, NYC

Often when a question arises as to what to eat for dinner, I think of Indian food.  I am a very happy gal with chicken makhani, basmati rice, an onion kulcha or a nan laid out in front of me.  I have heard some very good things about Indian Accent, a relatively new restaurant in midtown Manhattan, adjacent to the Parker Hotel. The décor here is unlike most Indian restaurants I have visited; no boldly colored fabrics, beautiful tapestries, intricately carved wood, or lanterns.  Indian Accent restaurant looks like something that Daniel Boulud would envision.  There are about fifteen wooden tables and a few small booths, fabric covered modern chairs, a lit bar with glass shelves and golden accents throughout, and large glass vases filled with flowering branches. The menu is complicated, however, our terrific waiter took his time and explained each dish and even made some wonderful suggestions.  Actually, everyone at the restaurant was really professiona...

A. Lacroix Patisserie, Paris

My visits to Paris are usually carefully planned out; practically every meal is decided far in advance, and same goes for pastries, ice cream and macaron.  While I have not visited every pastry shop in Paris, that would be almost impossible given their numbers, I am aware of most of them.  Imagine my happiness when I came across a brand new patisserie, one that is barely a year old!   A. Lacroix is a lovely tea room/patisserie opened by an American woman and a Parisian pastry chef.  Jackie, the founder, is originally from Ohio but has been living in Paris for nine years.  She left her job in the telecom industry in order to pursue a dream of opening a tea salon.  I'm so glad she did!   This is a charming patisserie/tea salon with beautiful stone walls, wooden beams, plenty of seating space, and location that just can't be beat.  One side of the place looks at the Notre-Dame Cathedral! A. Lacroix is not just a pastry sho...
