While visiting family and friends in Warsaw, rarely do I indulge in anything other than Polish cuisine. I live in New York, a place where anything and everything is available at any time of day and night. The cuisines of the entire world are strongly represented here, in great abundance.
So, this time around, I jumped at a chance when a friend suggested a new Japanese place for dinner.
Uki Uki is fairly new to the great Warsaw food scene and I have to say, it is a terrific addition.
The udon noodles are freshly made, in an open kitchen, by a Japanese chef Taira Matsuki.
As we sat down, the waiter placed a small black dish with, what looked like, a small tablet in the middle. He poured the water on it and the tablet transformed into a small cylinder and it became a napkin. Very clever and entertaining! We were also given a mortar and pestle to grind our sesame seeds. Little details like those make for a fun dining experience.
My friend had delicious tempura
while I enjoyed the Kama-age udon with kakiage tempura of sweet potato, onion and carrot. The noodles were perfect, a bit al dente, with a nice consistency and the tempura was not too greasy.
They serve either fish or pork broth with the udon and also have great ramen, salads and even the choya umeshu (plum wine). This was a very enjoyable meal and I am looking forward to returning to Uki Uki during my visits to Warsaw.
