We visit one of Zapiecek restaurants during each visit to Warsaw. Actually, let me rephrase that, we dine at Zapiecek every other day while visiting Warsaw. We always go there for lunch as dinner is reserved strictly for the family.
Zapiecek is a chain of restaurants with a few locations throughout Warsaw, boasting pierogi as their specialty. They are so much more than just a pierogi place. For those who don't know, pierogi is a Polish dumpling stuffed with a variety of fillings like: meats, cabbage and mushrooms, cheese, fruit, potato and onion, vegetables, etc. The pierogi can be fried or boiled, served with sour cream, bits of bacon or fat. By the way, here in the U.S.A., pierogis is the term used by most Americans. In Polish, it is - one pierog and many pierogi.
the decor is very creative
My personal favorite are the blueberry pierogi with vanilla cream. I cannot say enough about how delicious this dish is, the dough of the pierogi is soft, the blueberries are a bit tart and the vanilla cream is pure heaven.
I get them during the summer, when the blueberries are fresh,
and during the winter when they are frozen but the taste is just as great.
This is what the blueberry pierogi look like when just out of the kitchen, pretty and smelling of sweet cream. A word of caution, one needs to be careful when cutting into them since they sometimes have a tendency to squirt and the juice does stain.
Zapiecek also has great sausages, soups, potato pancakes with meat sauce, pork knuckles and salads.
I saw someone eat a huge potato pancake with goulash, it looked and smelled great. That will be my choice next time. I find that there are a lot of great options for food in Warsaw but not enough time.
My friend got boiled pierogi with meat and cabbage and mushrooms, the meat was very flavorful and tender.
Those were delicious fried pierogi with cheese and potato and onion.
This is not Michelin star dining and it doesn't pretend to be, it is good food, served in a pleasant atmosphere by friendly people. I am a true fan.
