Normally, when I go on vacations, I don't visit libraries. However, this is one of my favorite buildings in Warsaw and I make my way there each time I am in the city.
The library was established in 1817 as part of the Royal University of Warsaw. This building, located between the Wisla (Vistula) river and the main campus of the University, opened in 1999. The building is made of concrete, glass and steel which helps to create a very striking structure.
There are 8 big copper panels on the outside of the building, they present the realm of knowledge, memory and writing. They are excerpts from the works of a Polish poet, from Plato, from Arabic and Indian classics, from the Bible, mathematical formulas, a score by a Polish composer and an old Russian chronicle.
What makes this library extra special is the roof top garden. It was designed by Irena Bajerska and it opened in 2002. It is considered to be one of the largest and most beautiful roof gardens in Europe.
The entrance to the garden is on the side of the library, through these doors,
