The Chopin Museum is located in a mansion in the center of Warsaw. The house was originally bought by the Ostrogski Family in the early 17th century when the area was still a suburb of Warsaw. In 1778 it was divided into apartments and it served as a student hostel. In 1806 it became a military hospital used by the French and later bought by the Polish government.
In 1859 it was purchased by the Musical Institute. It was destroyed in 1944 during the Warsaw Uprising and rebuilt in 1954.
Now it houses the Chopin Museum.
This is a very modern museum in a very old, traditional setting.
The detail work in the mansion is exquisite,
the beautiful molding,
the stunning, delicate chandelier,
recreation of his living room,
his piano,
The interactive displays are activated by the swipe of the ticket card.
There are original manuscripts of Chopin's music, his correspondences and other personal items.
Downstairs, in the middle of the room, one can sit in a special booth and choose Chopin's music from a computer screen. The acoustics are great and the atmosphere very peaceful.
I chose my two favorite pieces:
Nocturne No. 2 in E Flat Major, Op. 9, No. 2 and
Fantasy - Impromptu in C Sharp Minor, Op. 66
