Great things come when you least expect them. That was certainly true when we found Shukshuka, a great lively spot located on a side street of the Carmel Market.
We were looking for a breakfast place, my vote was for pancakes but my husband and friends were craving a good shakshuka. Eggs and cheese swimming in tomato sauce are not my idea of a delicacy, but I figured that I could just eat the bread. Well, I ended up loving our breakfast.
I watched them bring out loaf after loaf of the fresh bread, slice it, place the pieces in front of eager patrons who would devour them in minutes.
We sat on wooden stools around this Moroccan tiled bar and watched the bustle of the kitchen. The atmosphere was lovely, the music was great and loud, and the owners were really friendly.
Pickled veggies and a dish with tahini dip were set in front of us as soon as we sat down.
Our friend fullfilled his wish of eating shakshuka while in Israel. He chose the Greek shakshuka with grilled veggies and feta cheese
After all this talk about having a shakshuka, my husband decided on a chicken souvlaki which was served on a homemade laffa bread and included grilled tomatoes, onion, scallions and tzatziki. He said that it was fantastic, and I have to say that it did smell divine.
My fried fish were excellent, albeit a lot of work picking out the bones.
Just delicious, and it tasted as if freshly caught.
