Food in Lucerne, Switzerland

After a hearty walk around the Old Town we decided that a small lunch would give us some nourishment and an opportunity to rest. We were not looking for a huge feast but something small to tied us over till dinner.
As we walked by a restaurant with a few tables set up on a small square, I noticed a great looking Caesar salad and that was it.  We sat down, and enjoyed a surprisingly good lunch.  The place was called Cafeteria Emilio, it was clean, fast and delicious.  I liked that they had plenty of magazines to peruse.  Although they were all in German, I still had fun looking through them.

My husband got a curry chicken sandwich

and I got a chicken Caesar salad, it was very fresh and tasty.

A few days prior to our arrival in Lucerne I made dinner reservations at Marlin, a lovely fish restaurant at the Palace Luzern, our hotel.

It was a beautiful evening and it couldn't have been spent any better than at the lakeside terrace.

My husband enjoyed the lobster soup

while I had the fresh salad with a delicious dressing.

It was wonderful to watch the sun go down and the mountains turn different colors.

We both enjoyed deliciously fresh fish

  and a great dessert.

The meal at Marlin was exquisite.  The service, the setting and the food were perfect.

The next day, our lunch was at a nice place right by the water.  It was a touristy restaurant but the food was very good and the location, by the Chapel Bridge, made it so much more special.

And now, the evening and our final dinner in Lucerne.   With the hopes of some local fun I booked the Stadtkeller, a restaurant and a show.

Stadtkeller was a fun place with a Swiss folklore show that had it all: yodeling, cow bell ringing, saw, glass and spoon playing, Swiss horns, procession of the flags, singing etc.  The performers got the audience involved and had people come up to the stage to help play instruments or yodel.

While a totally touristy and goofy thing to do, I have to admit that it was fun.

The food was, well, we really enjoyed the show.

The ice cream cake was very good.

And now, something sweet.  I really liked the Bachmann stores, a chain of bakeries throughout Lucerne and Zurich.  They sell baked goods, cakes, ice cream, chocolates, pastry and sandwiches.  I found them to be excellent.  We enjoyed some of their baked goods for breakfast and even bought some pastry to take to the hotel for a midnight snack.

This was a wall of flowing chocolate, crazy good.

  1. Thank you for suggesting the food place! Will definitely stop by this cafe. Chapel bridge and water tower is undoubtedly the beauty of Lucerne City. I am flying Switzerland next week, very excited to be in the city.

Bordier Butter - The Best Butter in France

France is in the midst of a butter shortage!  Due to a decrease in milk production and a substantial demand for French pastries all over the world (mainly China and the Middle East), the price of butter has increased by 60% in one year.  The French are stocking up and thus creating shortages.  French newspapers are publishing articles titled "A guide to cooking without butter".  So, with hopes that the shortages are temporary, here is my ode to the best butter in the world.  I'm not kidding.  The. Best. Butter. In. The. World. Mr. Bordier, a grandson and a son of cheese mongers, became a butter artisan in 1985.  He acquired a creamery originally founded in 1927.  The supreme taste of the Bordier butter was first recognized by a chef from the Plaza Athenee while vacationing in Brittany, a beautiful region in northwestern France. Bordier is the lone butter master to still use the old method of kneading the butter according to the 19th century t...

Dallal Restaurant, Tel Aviv

Dallal is located in the heart of Neve Tzedek, Tel Aviv's oldest district and the first Jewish  neighborhood outside of the old port city of Jaffa.  It was built as a suburb in 1887 and is now a very trendy area full of cafes, boutiques, and restaurants.   I have been buying breads, cakes and croissants at the Dallal Bakery for a few years now, but this was my first time dining at their restaurant on the corner of Shabazi Street.   Dallal takes up a good chunk of the block since it was built on the ruins of three restored houses next to the Suzanne Dallal Cultural Center. There are a few sitting options while dining at Dallal: outside in the small garden-like area, in the enclosed courtyard with a view of the sky, and inside the restaurant which feels like old time Paris. Dallal is a perfect place for a fun lunch with friends, or a romantic dinner with your sweetheart. There are two lunch options at Dallal: 78 ILS for two appetizers and bread...

A. Lacroix Patisserie, Paris

My visits to Paris are usually carefully planned out; practically every meal is decided far in advance, and same goes for pastries, ice cream and macaron.  While I have not visited every pastry shop in Paris, that would be almost impossible given their numbers, I am aware of most of them.  Imagine my happiness when I came across a brand new patisserie, one that is barely a year old!   A. Lacroix is a lovely tea room/patisserie opened by an American woman and a Parisian pastry chef.  Jackie, the founder, is originally from Ohio but has been living in Paris for nine years.  She left her job in the telecom industry in order to pursue a dream of opening a tea salon.  I'm so glad she did!   This is a charming patisserie/tea salon with beautiful stone walls, wooden beams, plenty of seating space, and location that just can't be beat.  One side of the place looks at the Notre-Dame Cathedral! A. Lacroix is not just a pastry sho...
